본 연구의 목적은 경도인지장애 및 초기치매 환자를 위한 맞춤형 치유정원 설계 방식을 정립하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 사용자 참여, 상징적 설계 모티브, 그리고 설계 기준의 적용이 갖는 의미와 효과를 실증적으로 검토하였다. 구체적으로는, 경도인지장애 및 초기치매 환자에게 적합한 감각정원 유형 중 관상정원, 향기정원, 약초정원 등 3가지 유형의 치유정원을 설계하였으며, 평택시 노인전문요양원에 입원 중인 20인의 환자를 설계 과정에 참여시켜, 실제 이용자들의 의견이 설계에 반영될 수 있도록 하였다. 한편, 본 연구에서는 경도인지장애 및 초기 치매환자들이 소망하고 있을 불로장생이라는 주제를 설정하고 불로장생을 상징적으로 설명하고 있는 무산십이봉이라는 모티브를 통해 설계의 개념을 전개하였는데, 이렇게 치유정원에서도 설계의 주제를 분명히 하고, 그러한 주제를 성취하는데 필요한 설계모티브를 적용하여 설계를 진행하는 것이 설계에 의미를 부여하는데 매우 중요하다는 것을 실증적으로 보여주었다. 또한, 본 연구에서는 선행연구에서 제시하였던 치유정원 조성을 위한 몇 가지 설계기준들을 설계에 적용함으로써 치유정원설계는 일반적인 정원설계와는 다른 접근방식이 요구된다는 것을 실험하는 데에도 주목하여 연구를 진행하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to establish a customized design approach for therapeutic gardens tailored to individuals with mild cognitive impairment and early-stage dementia. To achieve this, the study empirically examined the significance and effectiveness of user participation, symbolic design motifs, and the application of therapeutic garden design principles. Specifically, three types of sensory gardens, ornamental, fragrance, and physic gardens were designed as therapeutic spaces suitable for the target user group. In addition, 20 pationts from the Pyeongtaek Senior Care Facility were involved in the design process to ensure that the perspectives of actual users were actively reflected in the final garden design. Furthermore, this study established “immortality and longevity” as the central theme, a concept that individuals with MCI and early-stage dementia may long for. The design concept was developed using the motif of the twelve peaks of Musan, which symbolically represents this theme. By clearly defining a theme for the healing garden and applying design motifs necessary to achieve it, this study empirically demonstrated the importance of imbuing meaning into garden design. Additionally, this study applied several design principles for healing garden creation, which had been suggested in previous researches. Through this process, the study explored how healing garden design requires a different approach compared to general garden design.
