Abstract
This study aims to elucidate how Dongrae Jukjisa in the late Joseon Dynasty poetically represented the historical and cultural landscape of the Dongrae region. Dongrae is a space characterized by a complex regional identity; it was recognized as the ancient capital of Gaya and a legendary land of immortals, while also serving as a site scarred by the Imjin War and a primary gateway for trade with Japan. This paper analyzes the identity of Dongrae as captured through the eyes of outsiders and examines its development in literary history, focusing on the works of Yi Chun-won, Shin Jeong, Jeong Won-yong, Kwon Man, and Yi Su-hyeong. Yi Chun-won, who took office as the magistrate of Dongrae shortly after the Imjin War, focused on the region's history by reflecting on the ancient capital and honoring figures of loyalty and sacrifice. However, as trade with Japan through the Waegwan flourished after the mid-17th century, Dongrae transformed into a prosperous urban center. Shin Jeong, who stayed in Dongrae as a government official, highlighted these changing customs. Subsequently, Jeong Won-yong, visiting his father’s post, captured the vibrant urban leisure and the influx of Japanese culture from a traveler’s perspective. Meanwhile, figures like Kwon Man and Yi Su-hyeong reflected on the historical past or depicted Dongrae as a strategic military borderland. Dongrae Jukjisa in the late Joseon Dynasty occupies a unique position within the Joseon Jukjisa genre due to these diverse creative patterns. By multifacetedly representing the complex characteristics of Dongrae as a historical city, a bustling metropolis, and a military outpost, it holds significant literary-historical value in expanding the diversity of Joseon Jukjisa literature.
