Abstract
This study aims to analyze the artist’s printmaking practice from a philosophical perspective, focusing on the attempt to expand urban imagery beyond mere representation into a “space of action” that enables active interpretation and interaction by the viewer. Rather than simply depicting the city as a landscape or collection of artificial structures, the artist seeks to deconstruct the embedded gaze of power and surveillance within urban space, visualizing it through strategies of resistance and appropriation. This approach reveals the potential social and philosophical significance of artistic acts that engage with the city. To this end, the study draws on Michel de Certeau’s concept of “walking” to dismantle the rigid and fixed perspectives of urban imagery and explores artistic practices that appropriate the city in new ways. It begins by analyzing the concepts of the “urban planner” and the “voyeur” to examine how a panoptic gaze defines the city as a space of control. It then investigates how everyday walking reconfigures and re-experiences urban space through individual acts. Building on this theoretical foundation, the study analyzes the relationship between the artist’s early print works and de Certeau’s theory, while examining how the artist overcomes the inherent flatness of the printmaking medium through the use of three-dimensionality, kinetic elements, and light to express spatiality and layered meanings. Furthermore, it explores how the processes of fragmenting, overlapping, and distorting images reconstruct the city not as a fixed structure but as an organic space. Finally, the study considers how the artist’s experimental effort to reimagine the city as a second nature—an interactive space rather than a functional construct—can be expanded into a subjective and organic space through the viewer’s perspective. Ultimately, this research proposes a new way of interpreting and experiencing the city through artistic practice.
