Abstract

(Research Background and Purpose) Modern urban pedestrian spaces are often designed with a functional focus on physical movement, resulting in structural limitations that restrict emotional engagement and spatial interactions. These constraints reduce pedestrian spaces to mere transit routes, failing to cultivate emotional and social connections. This study explores the mechanisms of emotional experience and affective appropriation in pedestrian environments, examining how modern walking art contributes to place-making processes. It reassesses the socio-artistic impact of walking art on public design and pedestrian revitalization, ultimately proposing a new theoretical framework for urban planning that integrates emotional and interactive dimensions into public space design. (Method) The study identifies auditory immersion, audio-visual narrative, and physical interaction as primary mediating elements. Using these as analytical frameworks, nine contemporary walking art projects were selected for qualitative case studies and interpretative analysis. The research explores how sensory stimuli within these projects evoke emotional immersion, foster interactions, and redefine spatial meanings. By examining the interplay between sensory engagement and spatial appropriation, the study reveals the multifaceted mechanisms through which walking art enhances emotional experiences and contributes to the formation of place identity within pedestrian spaces. (Results) The findings indicate that walking art plays a crucial role in reconfiguring pedestrian spaces into meaningful places where individual identity and social meaning converge. By incorporating emotional immersion and sensory experiences into physical movement, walking art transforms pedestrian spaces from functional corridors into engaging and interactive places. This process enhances emotional connections between pedestrians and spaces, offering innovative design strategies that differ from conventional urban planning. Walking art not only reconstructs the social and physical dimensions of pedestrian spaces but also emphasizes the importance of integrating emotional and sensory elements into urban environments to maximize their potential. (Conclusion) This research concludes that walking art serves as a powerful medium for enhancing place-making in urban pedestrian spaces by fostering emotional experiences and affective appropriation. Its findings highlight the practical applicability of walking art in urban public design, pedestrian activation policies, public art initiatives, and place-based cultural content development. Future research should expand the scope to include diverse cultural and regional contexts, while incorporating quantitative analyses to validate and deepen the contributions of walking art. Additionally, exploring the integration of walking art with emerging technologies offers significant potential for creating new forms of place-making, enhancing emotional and social interactions in urban public spaces.
