흄의 자살론에 대한 재해석을 통해 살펴보는 자살 문제의 현대적 쟁점들

이 연구는 흄의 잘 알려지지 않은 에세이인 「자살에 관하여」에 등장하는 논증을 분석하여 흄의 자살론에 함의된 의미를 규명하고자 한다. 흄의 자살론은 자살의 정당하게 받아들여져야 하는 이유를 우리의 의무에서 찾고 있으며, 그 의무의 범주를 신, 이웃, 우리 자신으로 설정하여 논증한다. 이러한 흄의 관점은 토마스 아퀴나스의 논의를 반박하면서 반 신학적 관점을 고수하고 철학적 해결책을 제시하고자 의도한 것이라 볼 수 있다. 그런데 흄의 이러한 논증 방식은 후대 학자들에게 많은 비판을 받아왔다. 그 이유는 그가 펼치고 있는 논증의 논리적 구성이 치밀하지 못하여 체계성이 부족하고 그의 논증에 포함된 결정적 오류로 인해 완전한 논증이라 볼 수 없기 때문이다. 이 연구는 이러한 문제들에 착안하여 흄이 범하고 있는 논리적 오류를 벗어날 수 있는 다른 해석이 있을 수 있다는 점을 보일 것이다. 더 나아가 흄이 주장하고 있는 죽음에 대한 논의는 신학과 윤리의 범주 내에서만 논의되었던 자살의 문제는 존중받아야 하는 개인의 삶과 가치있는 삶을 살 권리에 관한 관점에서 다시 살펴볼 필요가 있다고 본다. 이런 점에 주목하여 이 연구는 흄의 논의가 죽음과 자살, 안락사 및 생명 연장에 대한 논점에서 다시 해석될 가치가 있다고 보고 흄의 자살론이 잘못 이해되는 지점을 해명하고 주요 쟁점들을 현대적 관점에서 재해석한다
Abstract
This study aims to clarify the implications of Hume’s theory of suicide by analyzing the arguments presented in Hume’s little-known essay, “On Suicide.” Hume’s theory of suicide identifies the reason why suicide should be justly accepted as our duty, and argues by setting the categories of duty as duties to God, to neighbors, and to our own selves. Hume’s point of view intends to refute the discussion of Thomas Aquinas, adhere to an anti-theological vantage point, and present a philosophical solution. However, this method of argumentation by Hume has been criticized by later scholars because the logical structure of the argument he presents is not precise, so there is a limit to its logical acceptance. Another point is that an unavoidable error has been made, and the argument cannot be considered complete. This study will show that there may be other interpretations that can escape Hume’s logical error on the basis of such issues. Furthermore, in the discussion of death that Hume asserts, the issue of suicide, which has only been discussed within the scope of theology and ethics, needs to be reexamined from the perspective of an individual’s life, which should be respected, and of the right to live a worthy life. From this point of view, this study reveals that Hume’s argument deserves to be reinterpreted from a contemporary perspective. This work then elucidates the point at which Hume’s theory of suicide is misunderstood, and reinterprets the major issues from a contemporary standpoint.
