Abstract
Kant says suicide is a violation of moral obligations by using humanity in personality only as a means. Others, however, claim to allow suicide to protect humanity. This contradictory claim to suicide has sparked various debates about the possibility of moral suicide in Kant's ethics. I believe that this debate originated from the misunderstanding of Kant's concept of humanity, and argue that the possibility of moral suicide can be secured by double interpretation of the concept of humanity as a rational being. Kant's concept of humanity combines humanity as a moral end with humanity as a rationality that sets a subjective objective and seeks a suitable means. Therefore, suicide to protect humanity as a moral end can be a moral duty. In order to confirm whether the suicide is from the incentive of self-love or the moral incentive, sincere recognition of the situation in which one is faced is required. This article explains what it means to use 'humanity as end' as the only reason for prohibiting suicide in order to secure the possibility of moral suicide in Kant's ethics (Chapter 2). It will be revealed that duties to oneself require genuine self-recognition to confirm the motives for fulfilling the duties (Chapter 3). Finally, genuine self-recognition is achieved through the examination of the general principle of life, the actor will argue that his motivation can be confirmed through the values of life consistently pursued through moral maximes (Chapter 4). Through this process, you will be able to identify some conditions to enable moral suicide.
