Abstract

This study examines Kant's suicide theory, which argues for the prohibition of suicide, and examines the justification of the social norm that 'suicide is an act to be exterminated(denied)' which is widely assumed in modern society. But Kant's ethics can be criticized for the controversy which has non - realities arising from not acknowledging the exception of moral law (for example, demanding the adherence of moral laws to a patient with mental illness) and perfunctory emptiness. So it is somewhat unreasonable to justify social norms on suicide prevention by just only the basis of Kant's argument. Therefore, this study aims to overcome the monologue character of Kant's ethics by discussing Kant's suicide prohibition as a way of Christian theological understanding. Through this, we asked the question of whether human beings have the right to dispose of their own lives and whether suicide was a violation of natural laws or whether they neglect humility as committing suicide as a means for their own purposes in view of Kant and to ensure the validity of the discussion by answering in light of Christian theological understanding. In the Bible, the preciousness of living is self-evident, and killing and committing suicide are considered extreme sins. It is a Kant's way of saying that human beings have a right to live and there is a duty to live. It is the grace of God and the blessing of living itself. The Bible regards it rooted in the Christian perspective of life. Thus, even if its purpose and meaning are not yet clear, living a life is first insisting that it is precious and virtue. Therefore, suicide is not justified in Christian theological understanding as Kant's way of understanding, but understood to be morally blameworthy.
