흄의 자살론에 대한 윤리적 고찰

자살은 근본적으로 인정할 수 없는 행위일 것이다. 그럼에도 사안에 따라 분명 용인할 수 있는 특정 자살행위가 있지 않을까 생각할 수 있다. 필자는 이에 윤리학적 관점에서 타당한 근거를 제시할 수 있을지 묻고자 한다. 이러한 맥락에서 흄의 “자살에 관하여” 사상을 본고의 주제로 삼는다. 특히 그의 이전 저작들에 나타난 윤리사상을 통해 “자살에 관하여”에서 자살의 허용가능성을 논의할 것이다. 구체적으로 자살의 도덕적 허용가능성을 두 가지 개념, 즉 자유와 필연의 양립 그리고 덕 윤리에 기초한 도덕 감정을 통해 탐구할 것이다. 필자는 우선 자살이 자유롭고 동시에 필연적인 행위인 경우, 행위당사자에게 그 도덕적 책임을 물을 수 있을 것으로 생각한다. 그러나 두 조건(자유와 필연)을 만족한다고 해서 도덕적이라 평가할 수는 없다. 흄의 사상에서 자살의 도덕성은 궁극적으로 시인의 도덕 감정을 통해 결정된다. 특히 자살행위에 대한 시인의 도덕 감정은 당사자의 분별력에 의해 이뤄졌을 때 가능하다는 것이 필자의 주장이다.
Abstract
Suicide would be an fundamentally unacceptable act. Nevertheless, one might think that there are certain suicidal acts that can be tolerated, depending on the case. I would like to ask if you can provide a valid basis for this from an ethical point of view. In this context, I take Hume's thoughts of “Of Suicide” as the subject of this paper. In particular, I discuss the permissibility of suicide through the ethical thoughts shown in his previous works. It is argued that the moral permissibility of suicide can be provided through two concepts, namely the reconciliation of liberty and necessity, and moral sentiments based on virtue ethics. First of all, I think that when suicide is an free and inevitable act, we can hold the moral responsibility of the parties involved. However, satisfying the two conditions(liberty and necessity) cannot be evaluated as moral. In Hume's thoughts, the morality of suicide is ultimately determined through the moral sentiment of approval. In particular, I argue that the moral sentiment of approval toward suicidal behavior is felt when it is achieved by his(or her) prudence.
