본고는 오원의 가족 상실과 관련된 한시 작품을 통해 가족을 잃은 슬픔을 표현하고 극복하는 양상을 살핀 것이다. 오원은 태어난 지 얼마 안 되어 모친을 여의고 생부와 양부, 동생 등 가까운 가족의 죽음을 수차례 겪었다. 오원은 두 부친에 대해서는 『소학』의 효제를 중시하여 가족 간의 화락과 단합을 강조했던 생전의 가르침을 받드는 것으로 못다한 효를 다하고 그리운 마음을 달랬다. 그뿐 아니라 부친 죽음의 원인을 자신이 불초한 탓으로 돌리는 죽음에 대한 이해 방식, 꿈에 부친을 뵙고 가르침을 받드는 그리움의 표출 방식 또한 부친을 계승한 점이었다. 형제간의 우애도 깊었는데 동생 오완의 죽음은 오원에게 깊은 그리움으로 남았으며 이 역시 꿈에서의 재회로 표현되었다. 오원은 나머지 동생들과 유상을 즐기거나 시를 지으며 여가를 보냈는데 동생들과 함께한 시편에는 화락한 정서가 묻어난다. 모친에 대한 기억이 없는 오원은 평소 모친에 대한 감정을 잘 드러내지 않았으나 외조부의 유허지에서는 사무치는 감정을 토로하였다. 외가에 대해서는 외조부들의 유허지를 탐색하며 자신의 근원을 추구하는 한편 정치･학술･문학 다방면에서 명성이 뛰어났던 외가의 업적을 존모하는 태도를 보이기도 한다.
Abstract
This paper examines how the literati Oh Won (吳瑗, 1700–1740) expressed and overcame sorrow in his works related to family deaths. Oh Won faced multiple personal tragedies: his mother died only seven days after his birth, both his biological father and adoptive father died young, and his cherished younger brother, Oh Wan (吳琬), also passed away early. To cope with the grief following the deaths of his two fathers, Oh Won sought to put into practice the teachings they gave him during their lives. These teachings were based on the Sohak (Elementary Learning), emphasizing filial piety (孝悌) and family harmony (和睦). Furthermore, his attitudes—such as feeling responsible for his fathers’ deaths and expressing longing by meeting them in dreams—were also derived from his fathers’ lessons. Following his fathers’ guidance, Oh Won maintained a deep fraternal affection among his siblings. Consequently, the death of his younger brother, Oh Wan, brought great sorrow, which he similarly expressed through meetings in his dreams. With his remaining younger siblings, Oh Won visited scenic locations and composed poetry, with all resulting works conveying an atmosphere of harmony and joy. Having lost his mother too early, Oh Won had no memories of her. Although he rarely expressed feelings about his mother in daily life, he revealed deep sadness at the place where she was born and at the relic site of his maternal grandfather. Oh Won sought his own roots by exploring the relic sites of his maternal grandparents instead of his mother and deeply respected their literary achievements.
