해마다 수천 명의 해외 입양인들이 보통 단기 방문으로 한국을 찾고 있으며, 약 이백 명 정도가 한국에 영구적으로 정착했다. 본 논문에서는 스웨덴 입양인인 아스트리드 트롯찌의 자서전 『피는 물보다 진하다』(Blod är tjockare än vatten, 1996)에 담겨 있는 귀환의 개념을 면밀히 살펴보고자 한다. 트롯찌의 작품은 입양인이 자신의 뿌리인 한국으로 돌아가는 가는 것이 근본적으로 불가능하다는 반본질주의의 한 사례로 읽히고 있는데, 이와 같은 특정 방식의 글 읽기는 텍스트 속의 “불쾌한”요소를 효과적으로 짓누르는 검열의 구조로써 나타나는 징후로 볼 수 있다. 그 요소는 반본질주의 혹은 귀환 불가능성이 더 적어짐을 시사하고 있지만, 전체적으로 볼 때 오히려 더 위험하고 전복적인 그 무엇이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 자서전들에 내재된 전복의 가능성은 단순히 관광객으로서 돌아가는 것 보다는 훨씬 더 근본적인 의미에서, 작가 자신들의 귀환 가능성을 그들의 작품 속에서 언급하고 있는 것으로, 자신들의 정체성에 대한 작가의 의식을 잠재적으로 영원히 변화시킬 수도 있는 중요한 것이다. 필자는 귀환의 “존재론적” 가능성이 환영과 같은 기이한 모습으로나마 트롯찌의 작품 속에 내재한다고 본다. 즉, 필연적으로 어렵고 복잡한 한국과의 관계를 생각해 보고 그 감정을 분명하게 표현하려는 작가 자신의 시도를 통해서, 이성적 담론을 무력화시키고, 따라서 전복적인 결과를 낳게 하는 아이러니한 힘을 이 자서전 속에서 찾을 수 있는 것이다.
