Abstract

This study approaches the history of philosophy not as a mere chronology or compilation of diverse philosophical systems, but as a problem within philosophical thinking itself. Focusing on the contrasting interpretations of philosophical history by Hegel and Deleuze, it critically examines the speculative nature of historical narration and the question of difference. For Hegel, the history of philosophy is a systematic unfolding of Spirit, wherein each philosophy functions as a necessary moment that is sublated into a unified totality. Such a speculative account serves as a theoretical response to the disintegrating threat of skepticism and a self-legitimating endeavor of philosophy itself. Hegel believed that unless the history of philosophy is grasped through the lens of speculative reason, the very foundation of philosophy would collapse. In contrast, Deleuze resists this speculative framework, arguing that Hegelian philosophical history represses the immediacy of otherness and subordinates difference to identity. According to Deleuze, Hegel’s account suppresses free and untamed differences, so philosophy must instead be reconfigured as a field of non-organic and generative differences — those that have long been neglected or marginalized. Deleuze’s radical critique of Hegel's theory of identity reveals the limitations of the classical, dominant model of the history of philosophy. At the same time, this conflict between two great philosophers opens a productive and competitive space for rethinking how philosophical history might be developed and expanded in the future.
