Abstract
This study closely examines and verifies articles dispatched from Daegu and published in Jungoe Ilbo between May and October 4, 1930, during the period when Yi Yook-sa was employed as a journalist for the newspaper. By comparing and analyzing the content, tone, vocabulary, and stylistic features of each article with those found in Yi Yook-sa’s verified writings—including his confirmed news reports as well as his poems, essays, novels, critiques, translations, letters, and postcards—the study newly identifies 33 articles, in addition to the nine already confirmed, and argues that these were likely written by Yi Yook-sa. An examination of these articles reveals that even during his Jungoe Ilbo years, Yi Yook-sa closely observed and reported on the lives of ordinary people, addressing pressing social realities such as livelihood issues (prices, wages, unemployment), the tragedies of traffic accidents and injury cases, the loss of homes caused by floods and heavy rains, the sorrows of the impoverished masses, and local events such as athletic meets and civic festivals that enlivened daily life. Building upon these experiences, Yi Yook-sa later expanded and deepened his reporting during his Chosun Ilbo period, covering broader socioeconomic issues—such as the poor working conditions of urban laborers and the relationship between landlords and tenant farmers—from the perspectives of “capital” and “class.” Yi Yook-sa’s journalism is characterized by a strong engagement of the writer’s ideology and emotions, employing literary rhetoric to depict events vividly and poignantly. His articles demonstrate a compassionate and sincere perspective from the standpoint of the weak and the victimized, a flowing and elegant sentence structure, a skillful use of Sino-Korean vocabulary, and an effective incorporation of dialect. These articles reveal the earliest phase of Yi Yook-sa’s writing and serve as important materials for exploring the origins of his thought and literature.
