Abstract
Royal eulogistic title offering rituals were officiated by the Prime Minister during the reign of King Sejo 世祖and King Yŏngjo 英祖with the ritual places being different for the king and queen. The eulogistic title offering ritual for the king was performed at the external royal court, whereas the ritual for the queen was in two different places. With Chosŏn society strictly avoiding males and females facing each other, the male Prime Minister was not allowed to offer the eulogistic title to the queen. Thus, the Book called ch'aek 冊and Seal, po 寶were delivered at the external court to the eunuch called sangjŏn 尙傳. Sangjŏn took them to the inner court where he handed them over to the female official known as yŏgwan 女官. Then, the female official read them before the queen and offered them to her. When offering the eulogistic title to the king, always music was played. When offering the eulogistic title to the queen, music was played by female musicians in the reign of King Sejo, but music was not played after the King Injo Rebellion event (1623). Because female musicians, operating in Seoul, were abolished after the King Injo Rebellion event. The male musician was allowed to play music at the external court, but at the inner court where the queen attended at the ritual, a female musician had to play music. However, after 1827 (27th year of King Sunjo's 純祖reign), except for avoidable situations, when the crown prince officiated at the royal eulogistic title offering ritual,he offered the title to the king and the queen at the inner court. The crown prince was a member of the queen family, so he did not need to avoid facing her, allowing the prince to offer the title to the king and the queen in the same place. In 1827, while the crown prince was officiating at the eulogistic title ritual for the king and the queen at the inner court, officials were paying homage to them at the external court. After 1888 (25th year of King Kojong's 高宗reign), however, the crown prince, together with officials, delivered the Book and Seal to the eunuch, who took them to the inner court. Then, the crown prince went to the inner court where he offered the Book and Seal to the king and the queen. In 1827, when officials were paying homage to the king and the queen at the external court, music was not played. After 1888, however, when the crown prince, together with officials, performed the ritual of delivering the Book and Seal at the external court, music was played. After 1827, when the crown prince officiated at the ritual of offering the Book and Seal at the inner court, music was played, but since the queen attended the ritual at the inner court, the male musician was not allowed into the inner court. So the musician had to play outside the door of the inner court.
