Abstract

The purpose of the current study is to examine the mediation effect of perceived equality of opportunities as a link that can explain socioeconomic disparities in subjective wellbeing and also the moderation effect of socioeconomic value systems in search for intervening conditions. To this end, we estimate a structural equation model using the 7th wave of the World Values Survey data for a representative national sample of Korean adults. First, we found that the happiness of Koreans is directly affected by their social class position, and a part of SES-based subjective wellbeing is attributable to differences in the perceived equality of opportunities across education, employment, promotion, and the transition of fixed-term to full-time workers. Second, perception of opportunity equality is less influenced by socioeconomic status and its association with happiness is weaker among those who tend to believe that competition is good and hard work, not luck or connections, brings a better life. Third, subjective wellbeing is more vulnerable to perception of opportunity equality among people who follow the equity principle or oppose income redistribution by the state in favor of individual responsibility. In conclusion, pursuing the overall equality of opportunities in Korean society seems to be one of ways in which happiness inequality across socioeconomic strata can be partially weakened. Our findings also indicate that if rewards for hard work and fair competition are not guaranteed, the gaps not only in perceived opportunity equality but also in subjective wellbeing may deepen between high and low SES groups. Furthermore, more egalitarian social values may make happiness and life satisfaction among Koreans free from the evaluation of equality in opportunities.
