동아시아의 ‘탈식민‑냉전’과 젠더폭력, 그리고 ‘구연적(口演的) 재현’

오키나와와 제주가 직면한 구체적 현실은 서로 다르다. 하지만 제2차 세계대전을 겪으면서 제국 일본의 식민주의뿐만 아니라 새로운 제국의 지배력을 행사한 미국이 구축하는 전후 냉전체제를 ‘탈식민‑냉전’이란 중층적 현실로 실감한다. 그런데 이 중층적 현실 중 주목해야 할 사안이 있다. 이들 지역에서 ‘탈식민‑냉전’을 정치역사적인 어떤 추상의 담론 차원이 아니라 젠더폭력이 구현된 구체적 삶의 실재로 궁리해야 한다. 그리하여 우리가 집중적으로 살펴볼 동아시아의 ‘탈식민‑냉전’에 대한 여성주체가 그동안 낯익은 문자적 재현과 다른 ‘구연적 재현’이 드러내는 재현적 진실은 의미심장하다. 이 글은 국민국가의 상상력을 이루는 문자적 재현의 진실로 온전히 보증할 수 없는, 감춰졌고 멈칫거렸던 심지어 봉인됐거나 침묵했던 오키나와와 제주 여성의 목소리들을 ‘구연적 재현’의 문제의식으로 살펴봤다. 이러한 젠더폭력과 그 저항에 대한 재현이 종래 가부장중심의 국민국가의 상상력 안에서 문자성을 바탕으로 한 문자적 재현만으로는 한계를 띨 수밖에 없다. 그래서 구연적 재현을 예의주시할 필요가 있다. 오키나와의 경우 현실을 초과한 전쟁 폭력 중 젠더폭력을 문자적 재현에 기대는 것은 객관현실의 상식과 논리로 이해할 수 없는 ‘죽은 자‑무당’의 ‘말하기‑듣기’이므로 문자적 재현과 다른 차원의 구연적 재현을 적극화할 수밖에 없다. 그런가 하면 전대미문의 대참사 4‧3사건을 겪은 제주의 여성들이 말이 압살당하고 심지어 왜곡되는 현실에서, 문자적 재현은 어떻게 보면 그들에게 또 다른 젠더폭력을 가하는 것과 다를 바 없다. 비록 그들의 구술증언이 불완전하고 공백이 있어 비분절화된 소리로 채워지기도 하고, 그들의 상처와 투쟁의 삶을 받아적지만, 바로 이 모든 것들이 구연적 재현이 문자적 재현을 넘어서는 4‧3사건의 진실에 적중(的中)하는 말의 힘을 드러낸다.
Abstract
Okinawa and Jeju face different specific realities, but they are similar in not only imperial Japan's colonialism but also the post-war Cold War system established by the United States, which exercised control of a new empire during World War II. However, there is an issue to pay attention to among these double-layered realities. In these regions, the "Decolonialized-Cold War" should be devised as a very specific reality of life of gender violence, not as a discourse of any political and historical abstraction. Therefore, the reproductive truth revealed by the "cold war" of East Asia, which this article will focus on, is significant. This article examined the voices of Okinawa and Jeju women, who were hidden, suspended, or even sealed, as a problem consciousness of "representation of oral performance" that could not be fully guaranteed as the truth of the literal representation that makes up the imagination of the national state. The representation of gender violence and its resistance is bound to be limited only by literal representation based on literacy within the imagination of the traditional patriarchy-centered national state. Therefore, it is necessary to concentrate more on the oral representation. In the case of Okinawa, relying on literal representation of gender violence among war violence reality, is a "talking-listening" of "the dead" that cannot be understood by common sense and logic of objective reality, so it is inevitable to actively reproduce text and other dimensions. On the other hand, in the reality that women in Jeju who suffered the unprecedented 4․3 disaster are crushed and even distorted, literal representation is in a way no different from inflicting another gender violence on them. Although their oral testimony is incomplete and empty, filled with their unarticulated sounds, and their lives of wounds and struggles are written down, all of these reveal the power of words that hit the truth of 4․3 incident beyond the literal representation.
