Abstract
Due to rapid population aging, the Korean society is currently experiencing generational conflicts in various life domains; therefore, one of the most important and urgent issues for the Korean society is how to resolve social conflict and achieve social integration. To explore the ways to reach national cohesion, this research focuses on the role of consumer empathy, or the ability to vicariously experience and understand others’ feelings, in narrowing the generational gaps. As such, it hypothesizes that consumer empathy can mediate and/or moderate intergenerational attitudinal differences in three major social domains: retirement planning and social welfare, health and medical expenses, and social network communications. To reach such ultimate purpose, this exploratory study proposes a conceptual framework for the role of consumer empathy, investigates whether there exist the generational differences in the three major areas, and what factors influence consumer empathy. According to the proposed framework, consumer empathy is hypothesized to be influenced by several demographic and socio-economic characteristics, as well as individual-level factors (such as emotion, attachment, and ethical values), social structural factors (such as status and power), and finally environmental factors. The framework also proposes that consumer empathy can influence attitudes toward major issues in the three major areas directly and/or indirectly. An exploratory investigation was conducted as a part of testing the conceptual framework. To examine the presence of the generational differences in the three major areas, 910 participants aged between 20 to 64 were surveyed online through a research firm. Focal attitude measures with regards to national pension, national health insurance system, and social media literacy were specified to examine intergenerational gaps in Korea. Individual empathy tendency was assessed using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Findings from the survey showed that the generational differences in attitudes in the three areas were present even when controlling for other ancillary factors and that the generational differences were also present in some sub-dimensions of consumer empathy. Based on these preliminary research findings, several research propositions for future research was advanced regarding how consumer empathy can mediate and/or moderate these generational differences. This research offers several implications on consumer research. It provides information about key determinants of intergenerational attitudinal differences and consumer empathy, fosters needs for interdisciplinary research in consumer empathy and social integration, and sheds light on major issues in national pension, national health insurance, and social media literacy to consumers, policy makers, and professionals.
