Abstract
This paper explores the potential of immersive media as an alternative to the ethical dilemmas and passive viewer reception inherent in traditional documentary filmmaking. By examining Claude Lanzmann's Shoah (1985), it analyzes ethical issues within conventional documentary approaches. It further investigates the immersive characteristics of media historically, referencing 19th-century panoramas and frescoes from the Villa dei Misteri in ancient Rome. Additionally, the paper assesses virtual reality (VR) through the theoretical concept of an “empathy machine” and analyzes practical VR examples such as the UN's Clouds Over Sidra (2015) and The Guardian's 6×9 (2016). The study argues that immersive media effectively bridges the ethical gap between viewers and represented subjects, promoting ethical empathy and active audience participation, thereby offering a transformative ethical approach to documentary practices.
