Abstract
This paper aims to retheorize the ethical potential of VR film experience by replacing the ethics of empathy with that of affect and drawing on the philosophical ideas of affect developed by Baruch Spinoza, Gilles Deleuze, Brian Massumi, etc. In doing so, I argue how the immersive experience specific to the VR film does not simply serve to enhance the spectator’s power of empathy but can contribute to an increase in the spectator’s ethical power that allows for the spectator-subject’s becoming-another by traversing its solipisistic boundaries. First, I critically examine both some of the discourses that support the VR film’s potential to increase the spectator’s power of empathy, and some critical responses to them. Second, as an alternative to the VR film’s ethics of empathy, I offer the VR film’s ethics of affect by drawing on some points made by Spinoza, Deleuze, Massumi etc. Third, I show how the aesthetic differences of the VR film from the traditional form of film—a complex set of ways of approaching the world, the expression of mood or atmosphere, and the omnipresence of any-space-whatever—can serve to form a better condition for creating affects for the spectator. Finally, I explore in detail how Gina Kim’s VR film Bloodless (2017) encourages us to experience a becoming-another by going beyond the enhancement of the power of empathy.
