Abstract
The paper examined the phenomenon of many scholars regard “immersion” and “interactivity” as a characteristic of virtual reality media when studying it. To examine this trend critically, this study examined the history of the media before virtual reality. Through the visual media that was popular in the 19th century, we examined the characteristics of these visual cultures. The 19th~20th century moving panorama and stereoscopes confirmed that they provide an immersive and interactive visual culture. Through this, immersion and interactivity are not only characteristics of virtual reality, but historically, topoi of media culture that emphasizes immersion and interaction repeatedly in visual culture. In conclusion, this study is not denying immersion and interactivity as an characteristic of virtual reality media. This paper suggests studying the characteristics of virtual reality cinema by applying various elements of modern it. In order to study virtual reality cinema critically, the need is first to rethink the linear media development discourse, and to retrospect on the immersion and interactivity that are repeatedly emphasized in each culture to modern concepts.
