초록

This article explored the complicated connection between human rights and education in New York City during the pivotal years, which were marked by major social and political events. It shows how important teachers’ unions such as the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) were in navigating the intersection of education and human rights. The 1968 teachers’ strike played an important role in showing how community control, racial tensions, and the bigger picture for educational policy and human rights were all connected. This study examines the evolution of educational agenda, especially teachers’ rights as social and economic rights, extending beyond the conventional emphasis on civil and political rights. Thus, it highlights the evolution of teachers’ unions from labor advocates to significant participants in the human rights movement, indicating a transition towards including human rights education into their agenda and discussions.
