한국문학 프랑스어 번역출판 연구(3)－피키에(Picquier) 출판사를 중심으로－

1990년대부터 한국문학의 프랑스 진출에 선구적 역할을 수행했던 출판사 중 하나인 피키에 출판사는 100여 권의 한국문학 도서를 프랑스에 소개했다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 피키에 출판사는 상업성을 지향하는 기획이 두드러지는 출판사로, 독자 중심적 번역 출판의 명과 암을 함께 보여주는 사례라 할 수 있다. 이 글은 피키에 출판사의 전반적인 번역출판 현황과 그 의미를 논하기 위하여 출간된 한국문학 도서의 서지사항을 정리하고 변화 양상을 확인한 후, 수차례 번역된 작가들을 중심으로 해당 출판사 번역 출판 도서의 전반적인 경향성을 살펴보았다. 특히 주목되는 서지적 특징으로는 45권을 차지하는 아동문학, 추리소설 장르의 강세, 그리고 25권에 달하는 여성작가의 책들을 들 수 있다. 각각의 특징을 중심으로, 본고는 피키에 출판사의 상업지향성의 요소들, 즉 새로운 독자의 창출ㆍ코드화된 장르ㆍ보편화 전략의 활용을 논하였다. 이를 통해 『고양이 학교』의 흥행을 기점으로 한 아동문학 경쟁력의 발견, 매체 전환에 용이한 서사 장르의 특성, 보편화 전략의 한계와 정전의 제약을 넘어서는 대중 독자들의 욕망 등을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편, 피키에 출판사의 한국문학 목록에는 앞서 거론한 특징들로는 수렴되지 않는 다양한 작품들 또한 존재한다. 이는 각 번역서가 지닌 풍부한 논점을 바탕으로 한 후속 논의의 지속적인 필요성을 시사한다.
Abstract
Éditions Picquier, one of the pioneering publishers in introducing Korean literature to France since the 1990s, merits attention for introducing approximately 100 Korean literary works to France. Éditions Picquier represents a publisher with pronounced commercial-oriented planning, demonstrating both merits and drawbacks of reader-centered translation publishing. This study compiled bibliographic information of published Korean literary works and examined changing patterns to discuss the overall status and significance of Éditions Picquier’s translation publishing. The study then analyzed general tendencies of the publisher’s translated works, focusing on frequently translated authors. Particularly notable bibliographic features include 45 volumes of children’s literature, prominence of mystery novel genre, and 25 volumes by female writers. Focusing on each feature, this paper discussed elements of Éditions Picquier’s commercial orientation: creation of new readers, codified genres, and the use of universalization strategies. Through this analysis, this paper confirms discovery of children’s literature competitiveness starting from the success of Cat School(L’École des Chats), characteristics of narrative genres that facilitate media adaptation, limitations of universalization strategies, and popular readers’ desires that transcend constraints of the canon. Meanwhile, Éditions Picquier’s list of Korean literature also includes various works that do not converge with the aforementioned features. This feature suggests continuous need for subsequent discussions based on rich arguments found in each translated work.
