본 연구는 프랑스에서의 한국소설 수용 양상과 관련하여 비교적 관심의 사각지대에 있었다고 판단되는 ‘번역물이 소개되는 방식’에 초점을 맞춘다. 한국은 근대이후 굳어진 등단 제도와 주요 출판 매체로서 문예지의 역할 등 문학 장의 여건으로 단편소설이 수도 많고 위상도 높은 편이다. 이러한 현상이 한국문학의 해외－특히 서구－진출에 걸림돌이 된다는 것이 자주 표명되는 견해인데 본 연구에서는 프랑스로 범위를 제한하여 이러한 생각이 어느 정도로 현실을 반영하는지 그리고 구체적으로 어떻게 드러나는지 살펴본다. 텍스트의 차원을 넘어 책이라는 실체를 대상으로 그 구성, 즉 한 편의 소설이냐 소설집이냐의 문제, 그리고장르명 같은 파라텍스트적 요소 등, 현지의 출판 전략 및 기대 지평과 연관되어원작에서 변화되는 요소들에 주시한다. 이 과정에서 한국과 프랑스의 문학 장을비교하게 되는데 이러한 비교적 시각은 번역문학을 대할 때 반드시 필요한 것이기도 하다. 이는 번역이 특수성에서 보편성으로 나아가는 것이기 이전에 하나의문화 체계에서 다른 하나의 문화 체계로 옮겨가는 것이라는 사실에 근거한다. 한국문학을 보는 타자의 시선에 만족하지 않고 특수한 외국 문학 장에서 번역문학이 흡수되는 방식에 주목함으로써 한국문학의 세계와의 소통에 관한 논의에새로운 균형을 주고자 한다.
Abstract
The current study concerns the reception of Korean novels in France with a specific focus on “how translated literature is introduced,” a relatively overlooked issue. In Korea, short stories dominate in both quantity and prestige due to a unique debut system firmly in place since the Modernist Period and the role literary magazines play as important media in publishing. This phenomenon is often considered to be a barrier to the distribution of Korean literature overseas – the West, in particular. The goal of this study is to investigate to what degree this observation reflects reality and how this manifests itself in detail. Probing beyond the textual dimension and focusing on the entirety of the book itself, the study considers various paratextual elements, such as genre designation, and how these elements shift based on the local publication strategies and horizon of expectation. During this process, the literary genres in the source context and the target context – Korea and France in this case – are compared, which is necessary when grappling with literature in translation. This can be explained by the obvious fact that translation is, first and foremost, a transfer from one cultural structure to another cultural structure before it is a transfer from the particular to the universal. The study aims to bring a new balance to the discussion of Korean literature’s communication with the world by considering how translated literature gets absorbed into the French literary field.
