Abstract

This study examines how Korean literature is constituted within the French publishing market and how such a formation prompts a critical reassessment of ‘Korean literature’ as a dynamic and fluid literary category. Éditions Zulma, having published approximately forty titles since 1995, is notable for its coherent composition of published titles and numerous reprints, largely due to the sustained efforts of translator Choi Mikyung and editor Serge Safran. Chapter 2 presents a bibliographic overview and discusses the compositional characteristics of Korean literary works translated by Zulma. Chapters 3 and 4 respectively analyze the French reception of Hwang Sok-yong and Lee Seung-U. The novels by these authors, translated by Zulma, have garnered remarkable attention, achieving high sales figures and nominations for the Prix Femina, thereby highlighting their unique status. Their works have often been described as possessing a universality that extends beyond the particularity of Korean literature. Building on this observation, this study explores how the rhetoric of ‘universal’ was constructed. The paratexts accompanying the translated works of Hwang Sok-yong emphasize the testimonial nature of his life and literary world, closely associating them with modern Korean history. This synecdochic strategy—compressing unfamiliar foreign history through an individual’s personal life—appears to have influenced readers’ reception. In this context, Hwang Sok-yong is reframed as embodying a form of écrivain engagé or testimonial literature, which is perceived as ‘universal’ within the sphere of world literature. Such representation distinctly diverges from the hegemonic label of ‘realism’ through which he was canonized in Korea. Meanwhile, the revised edition of Shim Chong, fille vendue(2007), refined by the author himself with the reading experience of non-Korean readers in mind, exemplifies how translation can actively intersect with the process of creative writing. On the other hand, the absence of prefaces or introductions in Lee Seung-U’s novels published by Zulma, alongside their continuing popularity, suggests that his works initially demand minimal cultural adjustment from French readers. In Korea, Lee’s works were primarily regarded as ‘intellectual novels’, whereas in France they were acclaimed as captivating narratives. Factors contributing to this shift include Lee’s introduction in France as a novelist employing romantic imagery and enigmatic narratives, the use of Christian symbolism as a cultural rather than a religious code, and a logical writing style compatible with French language. Through these observations, this paper proposes that the universality attributed to Lee’s novels stems from the specific resonance between the author and French readers, and that this universality is related less to “what” is narrated than “how” these narratives are presented. This notion is further exemplified in his recent work, Voyage à Cantant (2018), which illustrates a cyclical interplay between translation and creative writing. Ultimately, this research finds its significance in tracing the construction of universality by juxtaposing two authors rarely compared outside the context of translation.
