이 글은 1941년 미국에서 출간된 님 웨일즈, 김산 공저의 Song of Ariran의 한국에서의 번역과 수용에 대해 검토한 것이다. 해방기 『신천지』에서 부분 번역을 통해 처음 소개되었고, 이후 일본어 번역본을 돌려 읽은 리영희와 그 지인들, 영어본을 돌려 읽은 백선기와 지인 그룹을 통해 박정희 정권 시절에도 제한된 소수의 지식인들 사이에서 부분적으로 수용되었다. 이 책이 완역된 것은 1984년 동녘출판사에 의해서였으며 이후 금서로 지정되었음에도 수많은 이들에게 애독되면서 강한 영향을 끼쳤다. 민주화 이후 이 책은 중고등학생의 권장도서로 선정되었고, 역사 교과서에도 수록되었으며, 대학교의 교양 및 전공교육 텍스트로도 활용되었다. 김산의 생애와 이 책은 다큐멘타리로 제작되었고, 드라마와 영화화 시도가 있었으며, 웹툰 연재를 거쳐 그래픽 노블로 출판되었은가 하면, 음반으로도 제작되는 등 다양한 매체로 확산되며 현대의 대중 독자들과 만나고 있다.
Abstract
This article examines the translation and reception of Song of Ariran by Nym Wales and Kim San in Korea, published in the United States in 1941. First introduced as a partial translation in Sinchonji(新天地) during the liberation period, it was partially accepted during Park Chung-hee’s regime through the return of a Japanese translation purchased in Japan by Lee Young-hee on his return from studying in the United States, and through Baek Seon-ki and a group of intellectuals around him who reviewed the English version around the same time. It was not until 1984 that the work was fully translated by a contemporary publisher, and despite its subsequent banning, it remained popular and influential. Since democratization, it has been recommended reading for middle and high school students, included in history textbooks, and used as a text for liberal arts and majors at universities. Kim’s life and the book have been made into a documentary, adapted into a drama and movie, published as a graphic novel, a webtoon series, and even an album, and have been adapted into a variety of media to reach a modern audience.
