20세기 중후반 이후로 오늘날까지 종교와 과학 사이의 대화 또는 신학과 과학 사이의 대화가 활발하게 진행되어 오고 있다. 본 논문은 신학과 과학 사이의 활발한 대화에 기여하였던 존 폴킹혼(John C. Polkinghorne, 1930-2021)의 과학신학을 다루되, 폴킹혼이 이러한 대화를 통해본 논문은 폴킹혼의 과학신학에서 다음의 네 가지 점들을 살펴본다. 첫째는 삼위일체 신앙에 대한 접근으로서의 아래로부터 위로의 접근/사유(bottom-up approach/thinking)이며, 둘째는 페리코레시스의 관계적 존재(perichoretic relational being)로서의 삼위일체 하나님에 대한 이해이고, 셋째는 삼위일체 하나님과 세계 사이의 관계로서의 케노시스적 범재신론(kenotic panentheism)이며, 넷째는 세계와 관련한 삼위일체적 자연신학(a trinitarian theology of nature)이다. 그러면서 각각에 대해 비판적인 분석과 평가를 제시한다. 폴킹혼의 과학신학에 관하여 여전히 연구할 점들이 많이 남아 있지만, 본 논문의 작업은 대학에서 신앙과 여러 학문들과의 관계를 고민하는 이들에게 많은 도움을 줄 수 있으리라 기대하며, 한국신학계에 신학과 과학의 관계를 다루는 연구자들에게 통찰과 유익을 줄 수 있으리라 기대한다. 더 나아가서 이러한 작업은 신학 자체의 폭을 넓히고 깊이를 심화해줄 수 있으리라 기대한다.
Abstract
Since the mid-to-late 20th century, a dialogue between religion and science or between theology and science has been actively progressing to this day. This paper deals with the science-theology of John C. Polkinghorne (1930-2021), which has contributed to the active dialogue between theology and science. Thus this paper focuses on how he understands God through such dialogue, and especially how he understands the Trinity, the core of Christian understanding of God. This paper examines the following four points in Polkinghorn's science-theology. The first is the bottom-up approach/thinking as an approach to the trinitarian faith. The second is the understanding of the triune God as a perichoretic relational being. The third is a kenotic panentheism as a relationship between the triune God and the world. And the fourth is a trinitarian theology of nature in relation to the world. In the meantime, critical analysis and evaluation are presented for each point. Although there are still many things to be studied about Polkinghorn's science-theology, this paper is expected to be of great help to those who are concerned about the relationship between faith and various disciplines at universities. It is also expected to provide insight and benefit to researchers dealing with a relationship between theology and science. Furthermore, it is expected to extend the breadth and depth of theology itself.
