소수종족의 전유공간과 지역화된 종족의례, 그리고 종족 정체성: 태국 치앙마이 카친족 사례 연구

태국 치앙마이로 이주한 카친족 이주민들은 자신들의 전유공간인 WCC(Wunpawng Christian Church)와 반마이싸막키(Ban-Mai-Samakkhi)에서 자신들의 종족 의례인 마나오(Manao) 의례와 낀카우마이(Kin-Khaw-Mai)를 연행한다. 의례 연행 과정에서 태국 영토라는 지리적 특성으로 인해 기존 의례의 틀에 태국적인 여러 요소가 가미되어 본래의 의례가 지역화(태국화)되어 변형된다. 이 지역화 양상으로는 태국어의 개입, 태국 국왕에 대한 찬미, 그리고 그 밖의 요소들(태국 군대, 참여객, 관람객, 음식 등)이 있다. 한편 카친족 의례는 여전히 이들의 동질성과 ‘우리 의식’을 고취시키며 자신들의 종족 정체성을 공고히 하는 가장 효과적이고 주요한 기제이다. 의례 참가자들은 동일한 몸짓과 외침에 의해 발전된 노래를 부르고 춤을 추면서, 그리고 자신들 고유의 음식을 함께 만들고 나누면서 자신들이 카친족임을 기억하고 공유한다. 이들은 태국 내 지위와 신분에 관계없이 먼 타국, 특히 WCC와 반마이싸막키와 같은 카친족만의 전유공간에서 자신들의 의례 연행을 통해 공동체성을 확인하고, 자신들이 서브그룹에 관계없이 하나의 카친족이라는 종족 정체성을 되새기고 강화한다. 더불어 의례 연행 과정에서 같은 종족에 속한 동등한 구성원으로서 종족 구성원 간 통합이 강조된다.
Abstract
The Kachin migrants who migrated to Chiang Mai in Thailand perform their rituals such as Manao rituals and Kin-Khaw-Mai in Wunpawng Christian Church (WCC) and Ban-Mai-Samakkhi, which are their spaces. Since they dwell in the Thai territory, during the ritual performance, the original forms of rituals are transformed into the localized forms by adding various Thai elements reflecting geographical characteristics. These localized patterns include using the Thai language mingled with Jinghpaw, praising for the Thai King and involving other factors such as Thai army, participants, audiences, and food and so forth. Kachin rituals are the most effective and major mechanism for promoting their homogeneity and ‘Weness’ and consolidating their ethnic identity. By attending the rituals, participants remember themselves as belonging to the Kachin ethnic group and share the same songs, dancing, and their food together. They identify their common sense through their rituals and recognize and strengthen their ethnic identity regardless of their status and class in their community, especially in the WCC and Ban-Mai-Samakkhi. Besides, the integration among members as the same ethnic group is emphasized by the rituals and during the process.
