Abstract
This article explores the formation of urban spatial segregation due to the influx of new migrants in Mae Sot, a border city between Thailand and Myanmar. While the members of each ethnic group, especially the Thais, Karens and Burmese interact with each other on the one hand, they separate from each other and construct ethnic boundaries in Mae Sot on the other hand. I explore how their identities have changed in this process. Burmese and Karens came to Mae Sot through various stages. In this process, urban spatial segregation occurs through ethnicity, class, religion and the activities by specific agencies. Examples of segregation by ethnicity and class include the wealthy neighborhoods(for the middle and upper classes), Karen communities(for Karen people) and migrant worker areas centered around the factories(for the Burmese and Karen working class). Mae Sot is a city where various ethnic groups are gathered in one area. In this hybrid situation, the residents of Mae Sot live by interacting with each other in the same time and space. They interact and engage with each other on a constant basis. They may be employers or employees but they often form close relationships that go beyond the formal one. Likewise, relationships are formed through cooperation that goes beyond group affiliation, between foreign activists and migrants in the realm of education and health care service and between Thai people and foreign activists in the sphere of relief for migrants and refugees. New migrants do not always interact with earlier residents. Earlier residents, especially Thai people, tend to consider new migrants as threats to their society and creators of social instability. Karens and Burmese, in particular, arrive in Mae Sot belong to a lower class as migrant workers. Because of this, Thai people tend to consider them as a source of potential dangers. In this situation, there is a tendency towards the distinguishing and construction of ethnic boundaries rather than the integration of newly arrived ethnic groups with the major ethnic group(earlier residents, Thai people).
