Abstract
In the Crito, Plato makes Crito come to Socrates in the prison for the purpose of persuading him to escape a death warrant; Crito thinks that the execution of Socrates is not just, and he does not want to suffer the misfortune of losing a good friend such as Socrates. On the other hand, Crito worries about what most people will think about him: if Socrates' execution will be carried out, many persons will think that even though Crito could have saved Socrates, he didn't because he loves money more than his friend. Socrates rebukes him for worrying about the opinion of the public. In their dialogue, the controversial issue is clear. "Is it necessary to care about public opinion?" In Plato's philosophy, opinion (doxa) is not worthy of attention, while knowledge (epistēmē) is worthwhile. In Plato's Dialogues, this opposition is frequently repeated in rhetorical contexts. In Phaedrus, Socrates says that if a speech is to be good and beautiful, the speaker must know the truth of the matter, while Phaedrus says that an orator does not need to know what is really just, but what would seem just to the multitude who are to pass judgement, and not what is really good or beautiful, but what will seem to be so. This indicates that what is important in a rhetorical situation is to know public opinion. This article is a critical examination on Plato's distinction between opinion and knowledge in terms of persuasion and judgement. In fact, he distinguishes an opinion from another opinion.
