Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine Plato’s Crito as an example of his rhetorical practices by analysing rhetorical strategies in his text on basis of classical rhetoric. Crito attempts to persuade Socrates to exile himself out of prison (A1) and then Socrates gives refutations (A2-1 and A2-2). Based on the opinion of the many, Crito argues that Socrates and his friends will earn shameful reputation if he stays in jail. As opposed to Crito, Socrates values the opinion of the One who is an expert, feeling shameful about acting against his moral principles. I explore the structure of the personified Law’s speech (A2-2), in connection with Socrates’s principles (A2-1), the questions in Crito’s mind (at the end of A2-1), Crito’s arguments (A1), and Socrates’s assertions in Apology of Socrates. Crito might be also considered Plato’s another ‘Apology of Socrates’. In that respect, it can be reconstructed according to the theory of speech composition in classical rhetoric. On the one hand, the Law’s speech can be regarded as an expression of ethos which took an excursive but important part in Athenian court speech and, on the other, as a precedent for ethopoeia which would be later settled as one of progymnasmata, the preliminary exercises in the educational programme of classical rhetoric. Plato seems to show that Crito, with whom Socrates had enough philosophical discussions, misjudges the situation due to his psychological predicament of not wanting to lose his lifelong friend, and that in this rhetorical situation Socrates responds by dialectic as well as ‘soulleading’ (psychagogia). It is also in Crito confirmed, in conclusion, that Plato uses all the techniques of “those very orators whom Plato affects to despise”.
