Abstract
This study analyzed the status of instructional adaptation for students with severe and multiple disabilities in the 2022 Revised Special Education Basic Curriculum's Korean Language Arts, exploring implications from a perspective emphasizing their right to education and participation. Using content analysis on the curriculum document, 112 instances of instructional adaptation were identified. Modifications of instructional methods (47.32%) and content (41.96%) were dominant, while environment (6.25%), evaluation (4.46%), and grouping (0.00%) showed low proportions. This contrasts with reported field practices (high use of grouping modifications), indicating a gap between curriculum and practice. The low frequency in grouping and evaluation modifications highlights the need for curriculum improvement regarding students' rights to participation and fair evaluation. Conclusion: The study suggests enhancing curriculum guidance and teacher education, and proposes future research on the curriculum-practice gap and adaptation effects on student rights. Furthermore, the study proposed an expansion toward a multilayered line of inquiry that reflects future educational environments, through an analysis of whether AI-based materials can appropriately capture the learning characteristics and communicative functions of students with multiple and severe disabilities, and whether such materials can operationalize the principles of instructional adaptation in practice.
