Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of dualization in the labor market on the state responsibility for inequality reduction. The segments of the labor market are deepening and the growing inequality is highlighted as a social problem. In this background, this study analyzed whether there is a significant difference of welfare attitudes in the state responsibility for inequality reduction according to various employment status. Using the European Social Survey 6th edition (2012), this study analyzed the effect in the UK, Germany and Sweden, which represent the three major types of welfare regimes. The main results are as follows. First, the effect of dualization of labor market on the support of state responsibility for inequality reduction was not consistent. In all three countries, the variables that have consistently significant effect on the state responsibility for inequality reduction were income level and political orientation. This shows that the increase of unstable employment does not automatically lead to political support for inequality reduction. Second, Swedish workers strongly supported the state responsibility for inequality reduction compared to UK and German workers, irrespective of whether they were irregular or part-time workers. This shows that as we theoretically proposed, there is strong support for inequality reduction in Sweden where the universal welfare system is well developed.
