Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the lived experience of intrusive memories in adults who experienced complex trauma in childhood and to explore the essential nature of this phenomena in depth. 12 adults with histories of childhood complex trauma were selected. Based on data collected through in-depth interviews and research records, the meanings of intrusive memories were analyzed hermeneutically using Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological research method. In addition, the collected data were subjected to reflective and interpretive processes to identify essential themes and subthemes, while maintaining the stance of epoche and phenomenological reduction. As a result, five essential themes and 22 sub-themes were derived, focused on Van Manen's fundamental existential axes: relationality, temporality, spatiality, corporeality, and materiality. The essential themes were semanticized as “a mask of the mind that cannot be taken off,” “a burning scarlet letter hidden in secret,” “a glass wall surrounding me,” “a lost sense of nowness,” and “the identification of a hidden existence. The essence of intrusive memories among the survivors complex trauma was identified as “togetherness that repeatedly fails”. This study found that intrusive memories make it difficult to construct and maintain a sense of self-presence across relationships, bodies, time, and space, and clarified how these difficulties shape the process of self-construction.
