Abstract

This study examines the permanent exhibition and its guided tours at Jeju April 3rd Peace Memorial Hall, through the concept of 'memory mediation' and 'memory work' in a gendered place of memory. Based on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and archival research, it explores how gendered power operates and is materially enacted through mediation within Jeju 4·3 memory spaces. It examines the forms of memory work, such as guided tours, that seek to counter or move beyond these dynamics. The findings are twofold. First, the initial mediation of public memory through spatial design contributes to the exclusion and marginalization of women’s roles and suffering in the narrative of April 3rd. Second, the guided tours conducted by memory workers (especially the guides) function as a secondary form of memory mediation that compensates for spatial limitations. Their narratives go beyond representing women merely as victims of physical violence, instead reimagining them as multilayered subjects situated within diverse temporal and spatial contexts. This study expands discussions on how gendered power is embedded in the public memory of Jeju April 3rd and how women are represented. It also offers practical suggestions for incorporating women's narratives and gender-sensitive perspectives into the production of places of memory
