Abstract

This study compares human translation and AI translation (ChatGPT-5) of emotional scenes in Turgenev’s Asya to examine how generative AI handles literary emotion. Despite advances in LLM-based translation, little is known about how these models treat key elements such as emotional temporality, intensity, tone, and nuance. Focusing on four emotion-centered scenes, the analysis examines differences in emotional vocabulary and syntax/style, using selected aspects of Berman’s “deforming tendencies” as an analytical framework. The results show that human translation adjusts nuance and narrative rhythm to preserve emotional fluctuation, whereas AI translation prioritizes structural and lexical correspondence, flattening subtle changes and idiomatic expressions. The study highlights the differing roles of human and AI translators and provides a foundation for future human–AI collaborative translation models.
