이 글은 “인간은 무엇인가?”라는 칸트의 물음이 제기되는 자리와 맥락을검토하고 이를 통해 칸트의 두 철학 개념에 다시 주목할 뿐 아니라 이 물음이 칸트의 초기철학부터 말년의 철학에 이르기까지 가진 기능과 역할을 드러내 보고자한다. 첫 부분은 “나는 무엇을 알 수 있는가?”, “나는 무엇을 행해야 하는가?” “나는 무엇을 희망해도 좋은가?”, 이 세 가지 물음이 등장하는 맥락, 곧 ‘이성의 관심’에 주목한다. 이를 통해 이성의 본성적 필요에 따라, 이성이 나아가야 할 목적지가드러난다. 이어서 “인간은 무엇인가?”라는 칸트의 물음은 타인과 함께 발을 딛고살고 있는 세계, 곧 자연 환경과 사회 속에서 삶을 가꾸어야 가야 할 ‘세계거주민’으로서의 인간에 관해서 묻고 있다는 사실을 드러낸다. 문헌으로 볼 때 칸트의 질문은 그의 철학의 후기, 또는 그의 말년의 철학에 나타난다. 이런 의미에서 칸트의물음은 마치 목적지처럼 칸트철학을 그곳으로 향하도록 이끌어준 물음이다. 그런데칸트의 초기 문헌을 통해 이미 이른바 칸트의 ‘인간학적 전회’가 일어났다는 것이확인된다. 이런 의미에서 칸트의 “인간은 무엇인가?”라는 물음은 칸트 철학을 뒤에서 밀어준 물음이었다. 이 글의 후반부는 칸트의 앞 선 세 물음이 ‘세계시민’ 또는‘세계 거주민’의 관점에서 다시 물어볼 수 있는 근거를 얻게 된다는 것을 드러낸다. 이를 통해 앞 선 세 물음의 성격을 세계시민의 관점에서 드러내며, 이 물음에 대한칸트의 답이 무엇인지 찾아보고, 그 답이 “인간은 무엇인가?”라는 물음에 어떤 지평을 다시 새롭게 열어주는지를 탐구해 보는 것이 후속 과제임을 끝으로 확인한다.
Abstract
This paper is devoted to investigate the place and context of Kant’s question,“What is human?” and to clarify its close relationship with Kant’s classificationof philosophy into two senses (“philosophy in scholastic sense” and “philosophyin the sense of world citizen”) as well as to disclose the function and role ofthe former question in Kant’s philosophy from the 1760’s until the 1790’s. Firstpart pays attention to Kant’s concept of the “interest of reason” in which termsthree questions, “What can I know?”, “What ought I to do?”, and “What may Ihope” are asked. This attention shows us the ends which would satisfy theneeds of human reason by arriving there. On the other hand, this paper testifiesthat Kant’s question, “What is human?” appears at some places including aletter in the late phase of his philosophy; that his question is related withhuman as a world inhabitor who is living with others on this globe and thatthis question do function as a kind of teleological principle to attract all Kant’sphilosophical endeavors unto it. The latter part of this paper shows, however,that it is important to note that the question of human, that is, the question ofhuman’s place in divine creation already plays a crucial role in Kant’s earlyphilosophy. The conclusion indicates that next task should be to investigate the anthropological nature of three antecedent questions if they were asked once again with the question, “What is human?”, i.e., from the perspective of the“philosophy in the sense of world citizen.”
