탈냉전 이후 양산된 난민은 영화적 재현을 통해서도 그 모습을 드러내왔다. 유럽주변부에서 벌어진 지정학적 파탄은 수많은 난민들을 유럽으로 유입시켰다. 본 연구는 유럽의 예술영화 중 아동 난민을 소재로 한 세 편의 극영화에 주목하였다. 테오앙겔로풀로스의 <영원과 하루>(1998)는 죽음을 앞두고 미완의 시를 완성하려는시인이 알바니아계 어린 난민을 돕는 와중에 궁극의 언어에 다가가는 과정을 다룬다. 마이클 윈터바텀의 세미-다큐멘터리적 극영화 <인 디스 월드>(2002)는 아프가니스탄출신 난민 소년들이 경험하는 월경의 과정을 사실적으로 따라간다. 아키 카우리스마키의 <르 아브르>(2011)는 항구마을 구두닦이와 그의 친구들이 가봉 출신 난민소년에게 베푼 무조건적 자비를 다루고 있다. 리얼리즘적으로 재현된 <인 디스 월드>는 손쉬운 동정이나 연민의 감정에 호소하지않고 절제된 형식으로 난민 소년이 처한 현실의 바깥만을 보여주었다. 이와 달리고도로 양식화된 영화 <르 아브르>는 복음주의적 신비주의를 활용해 난민의 수난이라는 현실적 이야기와 병의 치유라는 신비적인 우화를 뒤섞었다. <영원과 하루>는거처와 주권을 잃은 존재자들인 난민과 시인-망명자가 서로 정서적으로 감응하는과정을 서정적으로 그려냈다. 유럽의 시선으로 비유럽의 미성년을 바라본다는 비판에서 세 편 역시 자유로울수 없었다. 그럼에도 조건 없는 자비와 기꺼이 연루되고자 하는 책임의 윤리의식을보여주고 있다는 점에서 위 영화들의 시도에 어느 정도 의의를 부여해 봄직하다. 이 영화들에는 서사에 긴밀하지 않은 농담, 우화, 시가 등장한다. 명징한 의미로해석되지 않는 언어적 요소들을 살펴봄으로써 영화가 보여주는 윤리와 미학의 양상을살펴볼 수 있었다.
Abstract
Refugees have been increasing since the end of the Cold War, and this aspect can be confirmed through cinematic representation. The geopolitical devastation, especially in the periphery of Europe, has brought many refugee into Europe. This study focuses on the three feature films of child refugee in European art house films. The Eternity and the Day (Theodoros Angelopoulos, 1998) deals with the process of approaching the ultimate language while a dying poet helps Albanian refugees. As semi-documentary feature film, In This World (Michael Winterbottom, 2002) follows Afghan refugee boys through the border. Le Havre (Aki Kaurismaki, 2011) shows the process of helping a refugee boy from Gabon in the style of a mystical fable. In This world , doesn't appeal to cheap compassion but shows only outside of reality in a restrained form. The stylistic film Le Havre utilizes evangelical mysticism. It mixes up with the real story of the passion of refugees and the mystical fable of healing the sickness. Eternity and the Day deals with beings who have lost shelter and sovereignty. It lyrically depicts the process that refugee and exile-poet emotionally react to each other. These works are not free from critics, because they are looking at the non-European under-age through tthe eyes of European subjects. Nevertheless, it has meaning that they show unconditional mercy and an ethics of responsibility to be willing to engage with refugee boys. Meanwhile there are unfamiliar jokes, strange fables, and equivocal poems in three narratives. By examining the linguistic factors that are not interpreted in a clear sense, we can see the moral and aesthetic aspects of the films.
