Abstract
For Theo Angelopoulos, a greek filmmaker who has had a profound influence on modern Greek cinema, cinematic access to individual and collective memory through the lens of temporality is the foundation of his cinematic universe. Angelopoulos, also as the critic of cinema, had been against the the abuse of the typical flashback which simply presented the past in fragments. Furthermore, as an ‘auteur’, he attempted to create new tenses by rejecting a linear temporality and blurring the boundaries between past and present. Eternity and a Day, which has received relatively minor attention compared to other works of Angelopoulos, brings to the screen the esoteric theme of the ‘coexistence of two temporalities’ that he has long been preoccupied with. Such as ‘involuntary memory’ in masterpiece of Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time, moments from the past are recounted in a sophisticated way that crosses the boundaries of time in this film. Accordingly, this study aims to scrutinize the presence of memory in Eternity and a Day, by sheding light on cinematic languages such as sound and camera movement. In order to examine these elements in detail, we will intensively analyze in turn the image of the past as the material of memory, the images as a framework for rearranging them in the present, the use of sound to bridge the gap between the two, and, above all, the camera movements that ‘remember’ the traces left by the past. By paying attention to how these elements unfold on the screen, we will re-read Angelopoulos’s cinematic style of long takes through empty space and dead time as an attempt to contribute to the ‘poetics of time’.
