On the East Asian Marine Order From the perspective of Portuguese in the Mid- Sixteenth Century

This thesis has researched with writings by Cruz, Xavier, and Pinto which have very abundant materials. In terms of clarity, it is very clear and mutual supplementary with materials from China and Japan. In this regard, materials by Portuguese are quite useful for researching the East Asian Marine Order at that time. As described in the first chapter, those who were in charge of silver trade in East Asia used to be called as ‘Wako, Japanese pirates’ in the Mid-sixteenth century. Unlike an assertion of Murai Shosuke, it is hard to sort them out as one group. First of all, they competed with each other for silver. In particular, there was a barrier between Chinese and Portuguese in religion and language. According to Nanpo Bunshi, as mentioned in the first chapter, Chinese pirates were on board a ship with Portuguese, and vice versa. Therefore, on East Asian marine order, the pirates are a gathering of different interest groups rather than one group for meeting and parting as its own interests often happened. The East Asian pirates in the mid-sixteenth century in this thesis had both characteristics as robbers and traders, whereas the pirates in the eighteenth and nineteenth century had focused more on robbery. In other words, it is likely that unity in traits of traders and robbers in the sixteenth century had divided in the late eighteenth century.
