Abstract

Women’s domestic labor is not unproductive or valueless work. It should be re-evaluated not as an act of devotion and care, but as essential labor that complements productive work in the public sphere. Neo-liberal labor flexibilization policies may appear to support women's labor, but in reality, they jeopardize it through low wages and job insecurity. By separating productive labor from domestic labor, these policies contribute to a fragmented and subordinated class structure, further marginalizing women's work. The more fragmented women's labor becomes, the more it loses the power to unite. Economic insecurity brought about by neo-liberalism- manifesting as gendered labor inequality, impoverished lives, and the loss of identity as laboring subjects-threatens the very essence of human life. If fragmented women's labor is to escape economic crisis and pursue a life of dignity, we must recognize the importance of domestic labor and shift our consciousness around labor by embracing a way of life that connects production and consumption horizontally. If we can organize women's labor based on this foundation and seek out the possibilities of solidarity, it will be possible to pursue a good life in a just society. What we need now is a shift from division to solidarity-that is, to think and act together as voluntary agents of political action.
