Abstract

This paper examines the influence of Foucault's later thought, characterized by the “aesthetics of existence,” on the politics and art of minorities today, particularly in relation to “autotheory,” a feminist tendency that emerged in the 2010s. Foucault's aesthetics of existence suggests going beyond conventional notions of artwork to create one's own life as a work of art. Examples of such a life can be traced back to ancient times before Christianity. Foucault explores various methods by which ancient people gave style to their lives as ways of using pleasure, and examines practices such as meditation, listening, reading, and writing as ascetic exercises that seek self-transformation in relation to truth. Foucault argues that the necessary task for us in modern times is to create new lifestyles and culture as a form of critique, which is possible through homosexuality and friendship that violate institutionalized relationships, or through the development of pleasure. Foucault's perspective of homosexuality as a process of “becoming” subsequently influenced queer and women's movements that view identity not as fixed but as performative. Emerging from this current, autotheory-as a practice of intersectional feminism and Black, people of color, and queer communities-crosses the boundaries between self and theory, life and art, criticizing and challenging the established institutions that have marginalized the self. By revealing the political nature of self-invention, autotheory inherits Foucault's aesthetics of existence.
