Abstract
National interest is a critical conceptual index to show a state's geopolitical inherence combining academic discipline and practical comprehensiveness. The primary concern of South Korea's vital national interest is given to the power balance among the four strong states, the U.S., China, Japan, and Russia, due to the characteristic features surrounding the Korean Peninsula. The onset of the post-War Northeast Asian international relations between later 1940s and early 1950s, in particular, marked a decisive power balance among the U.S., China, and Japan. Since the 1950s Korea's national interest has been calculated as a dependent variable driven by the power balance of those three power states. Both the academic and professional literatures are now replete with analyses of topics such as "Northeast Asian era," "hub of Northeast Asia," "cooperative- independent defense," "utilizing foreign influence strategy." However, as we consider Korea's relatively weak national power in comparison with the U.S., China, and Japan, we may continue to place on the marginal status in Northeast Asia. To maximize our national interest we have to carefully observe the characteristic vicissitudes in power balance among those three countries.
