Abstract

Purpose: This study examined the effects of the Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) program on externalizing problem behaviors and self-regulation in preschool children with developmental delays. Given that immature self-regulation in early childhood often manifests as aggression, impulsivity, and rule-breaking behavior, the need for systematic and structured intervention is emphasized. Method: An ABAB single-subject design was implemented with two developmentally delayed preschool children attending a kindergarten in U Metropolitan City. The frequency of externalizing problem behaviors and performance scores for self-regulation behaviors were measured using daily behavior checklists and direct observation across baseline, intervention, withdrawal, re-intervention, and maintenance phases. Intervention fidelity and social validity were evaluated to ensure accuracy and practical applicability. Results: Following the implementation of the CICO program, both children demonstrated clear reductions in externalizing problem behaviors and significant improvements in self-regulation. Although a slight increase in problem behaviors occurred during the withdrawal phase, behavior improvements reappeared with re-intervention, and positive effects were maintained during the maintenance phase. Conclusion: The CICO program was confirmed as an effective Tier 2 Positive Behavior Support(PBS)-based intervention for reducing externalizing problem behaviors and enhancing self-regulation in preschool children with developmental delays. This study provides a structured intervention model applicable to early childhood education settings. Future research should include children with more diverse developmental characteristics and examine long-term maintenance effects.
