Abstract

This paper compares Kim Won-il's -Meditation on the Snipe- and Sawako Ariyoshi's -Complex Pollution-, two representative environmental novels form Korea and Japan. The analysis uses attitudes and values regarding interest in nature and life, as well as approaches derived from addressing environmental pollution, as key criteria. Through the aspects of "characters with ecological consciousness" and "diversification of perspectives", it was found that both authors wrote with a strong sense of mission to confront the environmental crisis. In Meditation on the Snipe, ecological consciousness is expressed through characters who derive comfort front nature and embody solidarity with it. In Complex Pollution, the main characters serve as examples of a correct attitude toward Mother Nature. By examining shifts and transformations in narrative perspective, along with the communicate the realities of environmental pollution as clearly as possible. The findings suggest that both writers, viewing literature as record of the spirit of the times, made deliberate efforts to incorporate environmental concerns into their works and to employ divers narrative strategies in order to heighten public environmental awareness.
