Abstract
This study analyzes Joseon as a heterotopia in Japanese people’s perception, focusing on the travelogues and supplementary illustrations in the 1918 travelogue collection “Shin Nihon Kenbutsu.” On the basis of Foucault's concept of heterotopia (i.e., spaces that exist within reality but operate on principles different from everyday order), this study examines the representation of Joseon as a complex space constructed by juxtaposing contradictory images such as “civilization and barbarism,” “past and present,” and “foreignness and familiarity.” Using this analysis, this study reveals that Joseon is portrayed as a space that projects the emotional structure and identity of the Japanese Empire. This construction of an alien space extends beyond mere exotic representation to serve a cultural-political function that justifies imperial colonial rule and plays a significant role in forming Japanese people’s emotional and psychological space.
