Abstract
Both in Korea as in the U.S., the child-centered curriculum is widely applied as a concept that embodies the characteristics of early childhood curriculum. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the historical meanings of child-centered curriculum in developing early childhood curriculum theories and discourses. Child-centered education originated from the Romantic Naturalism of Roussseu in the 18th century and gained meaning in the curriculum context through Froebel who understood early childhood curriculum based on ‘idealism’. On the basis of evolutionism and Herbartism, the Romantic concept of child-centeredness in the early 20th century led to Hall's ‘developmentalism’ that emphasized the young child's needs or Gesell's ‘maturationism’ that focused on the young child's readiness to learn. The child-centered curriculum was further expanded and detailed into a curriculum emphasizing the young child's interest by Dewey's ‘progressivism‘. On the other hand, the child-centered thinking developed into ‘activity curriculum’ that stresses the free expression of young children and 'project approach’. In the late 20th century, it progressed to ‘constructivism’ based on the genetic epistemology of Piaget and Vygotsky.
