Abstract

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the instructional effects of the Basic Learning Support Team, which operates with the goal of supporting reading development in underachieving students. It also explored potential differences in outcomes based on grade level and gender. [Methods] The study involved 164 underachieving students from grades 1 through 5 in elementary school. Reading proficiency was assessed using the Korean Literacy Proficiency Test before and after the intervention. Data analysis included paired sample t-tests, independent sample t-tests, and one-way ANOVA. [Results] First, comparisons of mean scores before and after instruction showed improvements across all subcategories of Korean literacy, suggesting a potential positive effect of the support provided by the Basic Learning Support Team. Second, by grade level, students in grades 1 through 4 showed statistically significant gains, while changes in grade 5 were minimal. Third, in the gender-based analysis, female students showed greater improvement than male students in the vowel category, although no significant gender differences were found in other areas. [Conclusion] The results indicate that the instruction delivered by the Basic Learning Support Team may have a beneficial impact on the reading abilities of underachieving students. However, limitations exist in drawing generalized conclusions. In particular, greater improvements among students in grades 1 to 4 suggest that the intervention may be more effective at lower grade levels.
