Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the reading difficulties of 194 middle and high school students who were below the basic proficiency level in the Korean language and analyze their reading difficulty profiles. The aim was to provide fundamental data for the development of tailored education and teacher training programs. The main findings were as follows: students demonstrated relatively low difficulties in decoding, but some encountered greater challenges with fluency than decoding. High school students perceived greater difficulties with reading lengthy texts and inferential reading than middle school students. High school students had relatively low difficulties with vocabulary. Reading anxiety was generally low, but higher among high school students. They exhibited relatively low levels of dyslexia indicators, but high school students had more difficulties in some. Cluster analysis identified three distinct profiles of reading difficulty, characterized by varying levels of fluency, comprehension, reading anxiety, and dyslexia indicators, despite relatively low decoding difficulties.
