Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of evidence-based reading programs on the inferential reading comprehension and inferential sub-areas of students with reading difficulties in 3rd to 5th grades of elementary school. Individual intensive interventions were conducted on 26 elementary school students located in S city through evidence-based reading programs, and BASA reading comprehension tests were conducted before and after the intervention. A paired T-test was conducted to confirm the statistical significance of the growth of inferential comprehension, and the difference in scores for each grade was compared and analyzed according to the inferential sub-area. The result showed that the increase in overall reading comprehension and achievement of inferential comprehension was statistically significant. In the case of the sub-area of inferential comprehension, inference by text-information improved in common in all 3rd to 5th grades, but in the area of inference by background knowledge and information integration, 3rd and 5th graders improved, while 4th graders showed insignificant growth. Based on the result, the effectiveness of the evidence-based reading program and the need to change the focus of the inference sub-areas by grade were discussed.
