Abstract
This study examines the resource supply networks and production systems of iron pro-duction sites in the Chungju region by analyzing the supply of iron ore and charcoal to the Chilgeum-dong and Daehwa-ri sites of the Three Kingdoms period and the Wano-ri complex of the Goryeo period and later. GIS-based Cost Distance Analysis and Least-cost Path Analysis (LCPA) were employed to reconstruct potential resource transportation routes. The results indicate that the Chilgeum-dong site, located at the confluence of the Namhan River and the Dalcheon Stream, operated a regional supply network supported by nearby iron mines and extensive charcoal production areas. In contrast, the Daehwa-ri site relied primarily on a local supply network centered on charcoal production within the site and adjacent mountainous areas. Around Wano-ri, Bon-ri, and Yeongpyeong-ri, the concentration of elongated rectangular charcoal kilns suggests that a specialized charcoal production system established between the fifth and seventh centuries continued into the Goryeo-period Dain Ironworks system. These findings demonstrate that iron production in the Chungju region was sustained through an integrated resource management system rather than by mineral resources alone. The transition from the regional supply network of Chilgeum-dong to the local system of Daehwa-ri and the organized regional network of Wano-ri illustrates the diachronic reorga- nization of resource procurement. This study highlights the significance of interpreting iron production as an integrated network linking iron mines, charcoal kilns, and river systems.
