Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a plan for maintaining and managing barefoot walking forest trails and to derive priorities for important evaluation indicators using Delphi and AHP analyses. First, we reviewed both domestic and international existing literature. Subsequently, a panel of 30 experts with extensive expertise and experience in relevant fields was formed, and three rounds of Delphi method and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) were applied for analysis. The analysis revealed that evaluation indicators were derived from two overarching categories and 18 specific sub-elements essential for trail maintenance and management. Among the overarching categories, operational and user safety management aspects were found to be more important than trail facility management aspects. The overall importance and priority of the 18 subelements were identified as follows: guidance on emergency situations and establishment of preventive measures, installation of safety fences and signs in areas at risk of steep slopes, management of cut-and-fill collapse, provision of defibrillators and first aid kits, guidance on controlling access to forest trails and other mountain trails along with safety education for natural disasters, specialized inspection of trail facilities by experts, management in accordance with the Korea Forest Service's trail construction and operation manual, and special inspections (e.g., for typhoons, heavy rain, thawing seasons, heavy snow). Therefore, the paramount aspect of maintaining barefoot walking forest trails is ensuring user safety and mitigating risks, which necessitates continuous management. The findings of this study provide critical foundational data for establishing maintenance and management policies for barefoot walking forest trails, significantly contributing to the systematic analysis of their management plans.
